Discussion Topic 7

Q Requirements: Respond to prompt by Fri 3/18 at 11:55pm Respond to 2 peers by Sun 3/20 at 11:55pm Description: For this week's discussion we are focusing on listening. You will watch a video that investigates how mindful listening can be put into practice. The video you will watch features Hillary Clinton and her experience as a politician working in, and running for, office. This is not meant to be an endorsement of Hillary Clinton or her policies but rather to explore how she has stood out as a politician who prioritizes mindful, critical, and active listening. Your response to this discussion forum should be two parts: 1. You will watch the video and respond in a post to this forum. While watching the video, consider how Hillary engages in the different processes of listening laid out in the text and how she practices the guidelines for effective listening. Consider some of these questions in order to craft your response: How does she practice critical listening? What are specific examples offered in the video of her listening skills? How do they help her? How do they help her constituencies? Why are they effective? How does mindful listening help her achieve her goals? How does Hillary's ability to listen differentiate her from other politicians? How are gender roles discussed in the video? How is listening understood as a gendered activity? Here is the link to the video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9hIFDaGs8l8&feature=emb_title 2. Consider how you can improve your own listening skills. Does watching this video cause you to reflect on you own listening strengths and/or weaknesses? What could you do better? How could you benefit from being a mindful listener in your personal and/or professional life? Remember to use specific concepts within the text to help you articulate your thoughts in your response. Concepts you could use include discriminative listening (p. 235), critical listening (p. 235), anyone of the listening styles (p. 237-239). These are just a few examples. As we are progressing in the semester I want to start seeing you all applying the vocabulary that you have been exposed to thus far. Helpful Thoughts: Listening is often an overlooked aspect of communication. Our culture glorifies great public speakers and orators but neglects the advantages of being a great listener. Being a mindful listener is a choice that we make and it is difficult to do. It takes a conscious effort and great emotional investment but the benefits are great. Not only for you as an individual but for all of us as a collective society. Use this discussion question as an opportunity to reflect on how you can be a critical and mindful listener.

1. Watching this video about understanding how Hillary Clinton would govern shows just how much she engages and practices the guidelines of effective listening. Hillary was one of the few politicians who inspired loyalty in the people which most politicians don’t. Most of her colleagues and even people who didn’t like her all said the same thing every time. They mentioned that she was “truly interested in listening to people, she also can absorb a lot of information. In doing this, she takes what she hears from real people and real voters and manifests it into what she’s doing.
